part of an assignment was to photograph some of the favorite things i surround myself with. here are a few of them.
i think about things a lot.
i wonder what it is that i like about certain things and why we are, each of us, compelled to surround ourselves with them. things. stuff. i wonder if these are my golden statues, that i worship. why they bring me comfort. whether or not i really "need" them. what their purpose is.
many of the things i love are either handmade or of vintage quality. i love those things because they feel loved enough to have been hand made or loved enough to have made it this long, passing from one life to another. what does that reflect in me?
and then there are the other things i have that have become more like obsessive collections than purposeful objects: my baskets upon baskets of yarn and wool; my piles of fabric. things that symbolize the wonderful, beautiful, creative whatchamacallits i could possibly make with all that time i don't really have. is that sad? that i surround myself with these representations of something i can't really carve out for myself just yet, but obviously long for? is that normal? am i hoping that by surrounding myself with these things, i might be able to make that happen in my life? am i willing more creative time into my surroundings? i don't know. maybe. probably.
i strive to live a simpler life filled with less to do and yet i consistently overfill my own bucket. why do i do that? why is it so hard to let go and find peace with just a few simple treasures or activities? whatever the case may be, it seems to be a big part of my journey right now, i realize, as i photograph these things that i love, that surround me. and i am happy to embrace that journey, wherever it may lead me. as long as i am learning. as long as i am growing.
and these favorite things of mine, i embrace them too and all that they represent and are here to teach me. i do love them and are happy they are here to help me guide myself in the right direction, wherever that may be. i do.
what things do you surround yourself with? have you ever thought about why? i love hearing other people's stories and seeing what they love to surround themselves with.
i'll show more of my things tomorrow. happy friday.

sooo enjoying being home. every little bit of it. i had a couple of days where i was uninspired and dragging for whatever reason, but i think i'm over that hump and ready to dive back into all my projects. tomorrow i might ride my bike around, looking for a new favorite coffee shop that i can plant myself in and do a little writing. i'm way behind in my (writing) class, but i think i'll just upload the lectures (it's an online class) and plod along at my own pace. it's not a race, after all.
here are some cool links i thought i'd pass along:
all about what kinds of pesticides you can find on your food.

dorm rooms.
cafeteria food.
bathroom's down the hall.
three classes and two concerts a day.
that kind of thing.
loving every second.
still playing with haiku here. i realized i had the 5-7-5 thing all wrong. it's not words it's syllables. geesh. now i got it.
take care.
some photos taken initially for bench monday, but then i decided to submit the top one for self portrait tuesday instead (i submitted the portrait last tuesday, but am only just now getting around to posting this). i had written a haiku for that top one, but i can't find it. i think it went something like this:
i was moved by the
stag who led all the children back
home through the closet door.
i wonder if it's too late to submit it to the haiku group...
nahhhhh!
take care *
today we made cinnamon buns and ate them all steamy hot and cinnamon-y. they were good, but kind of cakey and not so roll-ish. probably because we are experimenting with different flours and mixed in a bunch of rice flour and some gluten-free mix with the spelt/wheat. still, they were good and the house smelled like freshly baked sweet bread all morning. mmmm.
that last photo is going in the haiku pool. so many good things happening over there.
if you're interested in playing along with the haiku poetry thing but aren't sure how to add words to pictures: first of all, you don't have to add the words onto the picture. you can put them below the picture in your description, if you'd like. secondly, try picnik! it's rather great free software that allows you to do all kinds of things with your photos. i have a lot of fun over there. just go to www.picnik.com and upload a photo. then go to "create" and click on the "text" tab at the top left. then, type in whatever you want to say and hit "add". at that point, you can fool around with colors and fonts and sizes, etc. have fun with it.
hope to see you there! have a lovely evening.
